October is Halloween Safety Month! 🎃

Hooray! Halloween is right around the corner (Tuesday, October 31) and makes for such an exciting time here at the Lake of the Ozarks. As one of the best real estate agents at the Lake of the Ozarks, I can safely say you can rest easy knowing your kids are trick or treating in a safe place here. In the spirit of Halloween safety month, here are 4 safety tips you can follow and go over with your children.

4 Halloween Safety Tips

1. Be alert when walking from house to house or store to store when trick or treating.

The streets can be busier than normal around Halloween time. Continuously look left and right when crossing the street. Only cross the street at corners using traffic signals and crosswalks. Walk on sidewalks or paths, avoid walking in the street when possible. Watch for cars backing up and teach your children to never run out into the street or cross between parked cars.

2. Do NOT let your children trick or treat without an adult.

As a precaution, don't let your kids trick or treat alone. If you are unable to take them trick or treating, see if a trusted friend or family member who is an adult can take them. Better safe than sorry!

3. Make sure your kids Halloween costumes are both creative and safe.

Dress your kids in bright colors and give them bright bags or baskets to carry to hold their candy in. Choose face paint over masks, masks can block your child's vision. Give your kids glow sticks or flashlights to carry. Be sure your kid's costume is the right size and not too large, in order to prevent them from tripping over their costume.

4. Drive safely on Halloween.

Halloween is an exciting time and children may move in unpredictable ways so slow down in residential neighborhoods. Take some extra time to check for kids at intersections and enter and exit driveways slowly and carefully. Anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic and know that popular trick or treating hours can be from 4:30 to 9:30 pm, so be alert!
