Interesting History Behind Why The Lake of the Ozarks is a Great Place to Live

I represent my clients with honesty and integrity to meet their needs and achieve their goals. In doing so, I like to educate my clients on the deep, rich history behind the Lake of the Ozarks and how it came to be such a great place to live. In this blog, I will discuss the interesting history behind boating at the Lake of the Ozarks, how the Bagnell Dam came to be, and information regarding houses for sales near historical sites.

Boating at the Lake of the Ozarks History

In the 1940s, after World War II started to end, people began to spend their money on more leisure activities. Boating started to significantly increase at the Lake of the Ozarks. After the war, boat manufacturing boomed. For thousands of years, boats were made from wood, but new materials, such as aluminum, started to make head way. Aluminum was prevalent in the aircraft industry  during the war, afterward it became a cheap material due to all of the surpluses once the war was over. Aluminum boats started showing up at the Lake of the Ozarks.

How the Bagnell Dam Came to Be

The Lake of the Ozarks is one of the biggest man-made lakes in the United States. The lake stretches 92 miles from end to end and covers a surface of 55,000 acres. The Lake of the Ozarks brings in millions of dollars from tourism for Missouri every year. This may sound shocking, but 86 years ago, there was NO Lake of the Ozarks. In August 1929, Union Electric of St. Louis, started construction of the Bagnell Dam. Construction ended in 1931 and the dam was named after the closest town when construction first started. It stands at 148 feet tall and 2,543 feet long. When the Bagnell Dam was constructed, the Osage River valley was fertile and lush. Once the dam was put in place, the river sanked back on itself, submerging the farmland and timber.

Houses Near Historical Sites

One of the many great things about living at the Lake of the Ozarks is getting to experience the rich and exciting culture. There is real estate near historical sites worth seeing, such as:

  • Ha Ha Tonka State Park
  • The Camdenton County Historical Society
  • Willmore Lodge
  • The Bagnell Dam

Interestingly, after the Bagnell Dam was completed, businesses moved to the west side of the Dam and re-opened, facilitating tourism. However, very few of the original building still stand, but the White House, built in 1932 was recently renovated.

I enjoy educating my clients about not only the current real estate market at the Lake of the Ozarks, but the rich, interesting history behind why choosing to live here is such a great investment. We have deep roots here at the lake and there's nothing like getting to live here and sharing the history of how the lake came to be with your friends and family.
