The Fascinating History Behind Golf

It's National Golf Month! The Lake of the Ozarks is filled with beautiful golf courses, which is one fantastic perk of living here and working here as a real estate agent at the Lake of the Ozarks. Golfing is so fun and once you have your dream home at the Lake of the Ozarks you can get your fill. In honor of National Golf Month, I am happy to give you the fascinating history behind golf.




The Timeline of Golf

The following covers some highlights of golf throughout time. Please note that not all of the history is covered here, just highlights of some of the big events centered around golf are listed.

100 B.C

Golf dates back all the way to a 100 BC. Early forms of golf date back to the Roman game of paganica, which is where participants used a bent stick to hit a stuffed leather ball. 

1567

It's been reported that Mary, Queen of Scots played golf just days after the murder of her husband, Lord Darnley.

1860

The first open championship was played at Prestwick and was won by Willie Park Senior of Scotland.

1893

The Ladies' Golf Union was formed in the UK and the British Ladies' Amateur Golf Championship was played for the first time. This took place at Royal Lytham & St. Annes. The championship was won by Lady Margaret Scott of England.

1895

The US Amateur Championship and the US Open were played for the first time at Newport Country Club, Rhode Island. Charles B. MacDonald and Horace Rawlins respectively won. The U.S. Women's Amateur Golf Championship was also played for the first time at Meadow Brook Club in Long Island and was won by Lucy Barnes Brown of the USA.

1946

The US Woman's Open was played for the first time at Spokane Country Club in Washington and was won by Patty Berg of the USA.

1950

The Ladies Professional Golfer's Association was formed in the USA.

1976

The Women's British Open was played for the first time at the Fulford Golf Club. It was won by England's Jenny Lee Smith.

2000s

Materials such as graphite, titanium, carbon fibre and tungsten were used to manufacture golf clubs.

2010

The 150th anniversary of the Open Championship took place on the Old Course at St. Andrews.

2016 

Golf was played at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro for the first time in 112 years.
