It's Homeowners Month!
June is National Homeowners month. Owning a home is the American dream! Find a trustworthy real estate agent at the Lake of the Ozarks and live your dream. Don't hold back and find that dream home you've been wishing for. In honor of National Homeowners month, I am going to give you some tips every first time home buyer should know.
1. Don't Over Invest in Furniture & Home Decor
You've just spent a huge chunk of your money buying your first home, be smart about the money you are putting toward your furniture and home decor. Budget wisely. When you becoming a first time homeowner, your expenses are most likely rising, higher water, trash, and electric bill. Give yourself time to adjust to your new expenses before you go on a huge furniture/decor shopping spree.
2. Make a List of Things to Check
Make a checklist of the things you MUST HAVE in a home. It's very easy to get overly excited when shopping for your first home and forget the essentials you must have. Take this list with you when looking at homes. If the house doesn't have any of your MUST HAVES on it, then at least make you stop and consider your other options.
3. Don't Ignore Major Maintenance Issues
You've bought your first home and you no longer have a landlord to come and fix common maintenance issues for you. Don't let small maintenance issues turn into large ones. Only hire professionals and while you do need to watch your spending when it comes to furniture and home decor, be mindful of "getting what you pay for" when it comes to home repairs.
4. Be Sure to Ask for the Homeowners Association (HOA) Contract BEFORE You Make a Decision
Maybe you want to buy a home and rent it out eventually? If you're buying within a homeowners association, some contracts prevent you from doing that. It's very important to ask for the HOA contract BEFORE you agree to buy a home. Don't trap yourself into something that's not right for you.
5. Research Grants and Other Funding Options
There are tons of grants and alternative funding options out there for potential home buyers that you might not have even heard of yet. Research all of your options. Take a look online before you convince yourself you won't qualify for anything.
